A Soulful Blend of History and Innovation

A Soulful Blend of History and Innovation Otaru is an exceptional city, an old harbor town with stunning sea views and beautifully preserved architecture. Walking through its streets, I felt transported into the past, surrounded by buildings that reflect how ancient Japanese communities lived, worked, and innovated. The craftsmanship and simplicity of their old technologies seem to echo in today’s advanced systems, as if modern Japan grew directly from this timeless foundation. It was my first time experiencing such a deep connection between tradition and progress. The city’s atmosphere gave my soul rest. I felt genuinely happy the moment I saw Otaru’s vibe—peaceful, authentic, and quietly powerful. I highly recommend Otaru to anyone seeking inspiration, reflection, or a glimpse into the roots of Japan's technological spirit.

We did glass blowing at a great place called Il Ponte - made a glass each to take home! Also spent an afternoon Kayaking nearby at Shioya beach with Max at Sunnyside Up -well worth doing with amazing scenery and even a swim at a beach! Also found a great little place for dinner that locals go to called Summi's Grill in a little back alley near the Sun arcade. Met a couple of locals who go there every day!

It's a charming city, so walking around the Sakaimachi neighbourhood was fun and relaxing. Watch out for day trippers from Sapporo though, which could crowd up the shops and restaurants. Dinner was a challenge - many restaurants refused to take our reservation and we had to be turned away from them.

I THINK STAYING HERE FOR 2 NIGHTS REALLY GIVE US TIME TO WALK AT LEISURE PACE AND EXPLORE OTARU CANAL NICELY. WE EVEN BOOK A TRIP TO SEE THE BLUE CAVE BY BOAT. SO STAYING 1 OR 2 NIGHTS IS GOOD RATHER THAN A DAY TRIP HERE.

Otaru is a gem of a destination that offers a perfect blend of scenic beauty, cultural charm, and culinary delights. The Otaru Canal was absolutely picturesque, with its historic stone warehouses and romantic ambiance—especially stunning in the evening when the lamps glow softly along the water. Strolling down Sakaimachi Street was a treat, with its unique shops selling handblown glass, music boxes, local BBQ wagyu beef stick and local sweets. The Otaru Music Box Museum was whimsical and enchanting—definitely worth a visit. One of the highlights of the day was lunch at Sankaku Fish Market. The market was lively and full of fresh seafood. I had a delicious kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) topped with melt-in-your-mouth uni, ikura, and fresh sashimi. It was one of the freshest and most satisfying meals of the trip! Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy the best of Hokkaido’s charm and flavors.

Otaru was a surprise..so much more than just the old canal.

Otaru was a surprise..so much more than just the old canal. Seeing it covered in snow was pretty special. The main street is very vibrant with plentiful vendors of fresh local seafoods (giant crabs, sea urchin, sallops etc)…although some shops are a bit of a tourist trap. We had a great meal at Stone and Iron not far from the canal and some tasty pre dinner snacks and brews, and Hokkaido gins at The Otaru Taproom in the same street.

Oh my goodness this place was a dream. The staff were incredible, the food was superb and the VIEW. I was literally almost moved to tears watching the sunrise over the ocean in the open air bath. Yes, the decor is a little dated but you get a taste of luxury for half the price you would somewhere else, so I certainly didn't mind. It has a sort of old world charm a la Grand Budapest Hotel I actually quite liked. Not to mention Otaru is a beautiful town. The two days I spent here would have made the trip to Japan worth it on their own.

Great location within walking distance to Otaru Canal. Very helpful staff, impressed with their willingness to go beyond their duty. They were polite and sincere. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel which really exceeded our expectations. Meals were superb and you can really see the effort they put to serve a good meal.
