Its a very nice modern hotel, the area has a lot of small restaurants nearby and a great coffee place. They offer a free beer and a bowl of rice in the afternoon, which is very nice for a snack after a long day. The staff where very polite and helpful, especially when we needed some information about the Nagatsugawa trail.

Not only is the guest house absolutely beautiful, but the host was extremely helpful and hospitable which made this stay the best we had during our Japan trip. He drove us to Magome so that we managed to complete the Nakasendo trail just in time before the last bus departed. He also made a dinner reservation for us and drove us to an Onigiri restaurant for breakfast. We had a great stay!

My family loved our stay here and were sad to leave. Beautiful, traditional-style guesthouse, with our own external courtyard. Located along the old Nakasendo, amidst lots of old shops. Just across the street from a traditional confectioner’s and sake brewery.

The host is supportive and provides all the necessary information relevant to the accommodation and keeps in touch during your stay. The house itself is big and comfortable, with a great kitchen area and a living room in japanese style. The bathroom is also big and has great amenities (not only shampoo, conditioner etc but special face foam soap, handcreme etc.) There were also different type of chargers available for foreigners. the parking slot is also big.

Beautiful private house in a charming small town. The owner, like the rest of the locals, were overwhelmingly kind. Kanoko also left us some deer jerky from their hunting, which was absolutely delicious.

The 8km trail from Magome was great and there were buses going from the station to take you to the start of that short trail. On the return you could either walk to the train station a short walk from Tsumago or catch a bus back to Magome then another back to Nakatsugawa station. Lots of options and times. A beautiful and picturesque walk.

We arrived here after our first four nights in Tokyo and welcomed the peacefulness and pace of the town. We walked two legs of the Nakasendo Way using Nakatsugawa as our base: one leg walking from Nakatsugawa to Magome and the other bussing to Magome and walking to Tsumago from there and then returning to Nakatsugawa to our delightful guest house. Everyone we met here was helpful and kind. .

We planned to do the Nakasendo Trail.

We planned to do the Nakasendo Trail. We took a train to Nagiso and walked the 23kms back on the trail. Easy to follow trail and relatively quiet out of the main villages. Note! IC card doesn’t work. Buy a separate ticket for the trip. We found restaurants hard to find but up at the supermarket we used a great little place. Staff didn’t speak English but with a screen to order and Google translate, we had a great meal cooked to order.

The location is actually in Magome, a very small mountain town outside of Nakatsigawa. The views are incredible and the town is very nice.. small shops and old style buildings. And from there you can hike to Tsumago and beyond. Highly recommend

Definitely a step back in time to the Edo period trail system through the Kiso valley. A glimpse into village life in Japan. The builder and shops were so authentic and peaceful. The Nakasendo trail was blocks away to hike to Tsumago. Standing near the waterfalls where Myamato Musashi trained was a gift. An epic part of Japan.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious. If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

This is a great guest house. Not your standard anonymous 4-5 star hotel. If you want something a bit more authentic, with a great ambience and very friendly hosts, then you should hurry to reserve a room. The rooms are simple, but comfortable. The showers and toilets are shared, but clean and plenty. The guest house only has a few rooms, so never crowded. The town …very original! (An old postal town)

Comfortable, clean and friendly stay in a well designed hotel. It’s well located and offers a free car parking space. Great place to stop for the Nakasendo trail. We really liked the quiet town/city of Nakatsugawa too with some nice eateries. I also got the massage/reflexology offered in the lobby which was perfect after walking around all day. You can also your laundry in the coin facilities provided.

Excellent location, right in the centre of the village with the Nakasendo trail literally on the doorstep. The hotel was very simple in the traditional Japanese manner, with shared bathrooms, but everything was spotless and everything worked. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The evening meal, at 6pm sharp, was a highlight of our trip to Japan.

The interior design of the hotel is beautiful. We liked the shower because of the water quality and pressure. The sofa corner was perfect for storing suitcases and belongings. The Onsen was fantastic and beautifully designed. A very relaxing experience. We liked the ritual of taking off the shoes when entering the hotel.
