Pompei is a small town. Do not expect Michelin rated dining. It’s a huge tourist attraction because of the ruins, so there are a lot of other tourists. Many people come from Naples and Rome to visit for the day or half day. But to really see and get to know the awesome and amazing facts of the ruins please consider staying a few days. We did both guided and our own wandering. Both had their strong points. Wear sturdy shoes and/or bring hiking poles. Pavement from two centuries ago is not like walking down a road, not even a cobblestone one. There are relatively even walkways on the main road but all others are uneven. Transport links, especially the trains were cheap and easy to find and allowed easy travel to Salerno, Sorrento and Herculaneum. Pompeii archeological site was only a 10 minute walk from our B&B and was a great experience. The train to Salerno was only €2.50 and a short walk took you to the harbour where we took a boat trip to Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento. I have an interest in ancient Roman history (from reading the novel by Robert Harris) and on that basis I ended up spending two days at the site (not one as originally planned). I think even spending a full day there 9am-7pm would exhaust all but the most dedicated traveller, given the heat in peak Summer (when I travelled). Also, bring some decent footwear: the narrow paved areas on each side of the street mean you have to keep jumping off to walk along the road itself which has very irregular stones which are a trip hazard. Gets busy, lots of tour buses. I didn't go as part of an organised tour, but what I did get and found useful was the audio tour guide thing that you can purchase from the visitor centre office before you go in. This provides basic information on each building once you key in the number. There is water available on site that you can use to fill up a bottle. Cafe on site also but was so busy, I didn't even think of joining the queue. I paid the extra 6 Euro for the visit to the villas, outside the main site and thought it was worth it. In fact I couldn't believe that the building I was walking through was over 2000 years old, it looked from the outside like 50 years at the most.Guest review bygraham001United Kingdom - 10.0

The garden is maintained very well and clean. I even got a bucket to wash my clothes by hand, and when I got out a few minutes late the owner was very kind to let me go (haha, but it was humid that day so clothes are not completely dry…) Everything is quite new and with logical design. Hot water is also stable and strong, which is a big plus in Italy. Would recommend if you want to spend 7-8 hours in Pompeii and don’t wanna waste time on transportation.Guest review byJuiTaiwan
