An amazing experience. Outstanding breakfast buffet. Good coffee. Very helpful staff. Beautiful view from the room, one of the most clean and amazing bathrooms I have ever seen in a hotel. Even though it is a bit more expensive, the money is absolutely worth it.

Beautiful location for a stay but tricky to access to snd from Torre del Lago Puccini Festival, given landslide. Best to enter from Lucca and great for stay rather than one night. Delightful property, very helpful staff, excellent breakfast, beautiful room.

The Masterpiece of Puccini

Once Italy’s 2nd largest city state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognisable historic centre is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely ‘passeggiata’.

Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.

The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.

Roman amphitheatre remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More pavement restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini – the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.

Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodation includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.

An underrated gem.

An underrated gem. Lucca has so much heart; no modern buildings, or anything to take you out of the serene setting of this city. Being so close to Pisa and Florence, it gets unfortunately overshadowed. However if you want the authentic Italian experience Lucca is a must. From wine tasting in the hills, to fantastic dinners around the city, this place to me, ranks far above the larger cities we saw on this trip. The cathedral and churches are a must, as well as the walk around the city wall. Although not too much to explore around the area, you slip right in to the daily life of an Italian. Morning focaccia and a cauppicono to the afternoon relax, Lucca is highly recommended for those who want to take a slow trip to just enjoy good wine, good food, and a lifestyle to dream of!

Lucca, within the city walls, is very walkable; it is possible to walk from one side to the other within 30 minutes. There are many historic sites to visit. Public transport is cheap and easy to use. Tourist information is available from a number of offices. There are innumerable places to eat, ranging from cheap and cheerful to luxe. Shopping is fun - the clothes shops along Via Fillungo always have interesting items to discover. The Puccini connection is strong and his music is celebrated in many venues.

Lots to see especially if you like to walk.

Lots to see especially if you like to walk. Only spent 2 nights there but did the walking tour which I would recommend. City walls were spectacular. If you are a Parkrunner, Lucca hold one 9am Saturday mornings on the city walls.

You don't need more than 2 nights/3 days to see everything.

You don't need more than 2 nights/3 days to see everything. Not overrun with tourists like some other Italian destinations. Definitely rent a bike and ride along the walls of the city. Lots of towers to climb and churches to visit. Food was exceptional and fairly priced. The town is small but not too small that you run out of activities to do. Locals were all friendly.

Lucca is a wonderful town, with lots going on but still focusing on the local Luccesians. Easy to visit Florence, Pisa, Sienna from this base, but try going north to the Garfagnana for a quieter more local experience.

We spent 6 nights there.

We spent 6 nights there. We are big walkers and walked everyday. Did the bike ride to Pisi one day. That was great. Consider fewer days if you are not interested in walking so much. If you have a car, you can easily get to other locations for day trips. The train station is an 8 min walk from lodging and you can also do day trips from Lucca this way. Lots of shopping and sightseeing available in Lucca. Check Lucca city calendar as they do have large sponsored events like the Comic and Games festival in early Nov (150,000+ people attend) and a month long music festival in July. It would be over run with too many folks to enjoy the peacefullness of Lucca! Plus books out a year in advance for these festivals.

Lucca in Villa is very much like a boutique hotel, in fact the large bedroom and shower room were better than many 'hotels', Breakfast is 11/10, again a spread which would put many a hotel to shame. Location is perfect, just outside the gates of the walled city of Lucca, with onsite parking it was perfect. If we were to be booking in the area again there is no question Lucca in Villa would be it.
