The Lily of the Lake
Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.
A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.
More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.
In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.

Poor signposting in Kerry, Killarney is difficult enough to get around by car but with so many hotels and B n B available, it is always busy. Not enough car parking spaces. Cathedral a place of tranquility and time to be quiet, away from the busy streets. Great shopping and entertainment available. Its a small town at the start of the Ring of Kerry.
Its a small town at the start of the Ring of Kerry. It was an excellent location to start the Ring. Its quite pretty and the area is full of restaurants, pubs and cafes - just what is needed. It is small and very walkable. I'm not aware of things to do there as only stopped for one night for the Ring trip the next day. Killarney is such a charming town and the surrounding areas are just beautiful. So much to see and enjoy. A little crowded this time I. August but we knew it would be more crowded this time. The Earls Court House was a wonderful place to stay. The property is unique and beautiful and the staff was so friendly. It was also just a short walk into town. Bustling, compact market town full of interesting places to eat and shop, surrounded by truly exceptional scenery. Beautiful park and gardens a very short walk from the centre. Fascinating castle, country house, lakes all a short drive or ride in tourist bus...or horse-drawn carriage. A great place to use as a base to explore Kerry's beautiful scenery by car / bike / service bus. The receptionist that checked us in was very friendly and informative. Our room was nicely furnished and the bathroom had everything we needed. The garden were lovely to sit in with a pre dinner drink. The restaurant was so good that we ate in on both nights of our stay. Great location in town centre of Killarney and walking distance from Killarney National Park. What I liked most was the focus on sustainability, but all amenities were good and modern on the other hand. They even have their own garden and chicken! I think more hostels should follow similarly.
