Hosted by Mama Julia and Kk Mothy, we had an incredible experience at shady homestay for two days. Arrived on Tuesday afternoon, Julia and Mothy picked us up at Waisai. Storm was raging but they prepared everything so our big bags were not wet. Even though waves were very high, Timothy mastered ocean and found our way through the waves. We were then welcomed by the rest of the family with a delicious tea time and snorkeled in front of the homestay, lost in the small satellite islands around Gam island. The place is peaceful, quiet, and extremely beautiful in the middle of nowhere in the Raja Ampat : a Lunar experience. On Wednesday, Timothy and Julia organized us a fabulous daytrip around Gam Island between Sawingrai village, light water, labyrinth mangroves, magical reefs, caves, view points, snorkelings, painted hands geopark famous site, hidden bays, beach walk, coconut… everything was perfect and made very friendly and warm welcoming by Julia, and very fun with Timothy’s talents to drive the boat as a sports car driver in tight ways and hard turnovers ! We left on Thursday after another little trip with Timothy for a batcave and snorkeling morning. We saw everything with them : lots of reef fishes and bigger fishes, manta, dolphins, blacktop sharks, turtles … and even the rarest and endemic Wobbegong shark. What made the experience different and fantastic is the kindness of this whole family working together and making everything seem effortless and great even though it could be hard work for them. Shady Homestay is THE PLACE TO BE for visiting Gam island with the fun experience on board with Timothy and the warm welcome and comfort of the delicious food provided by Julia and their family. THANK YOU SO MUCH. We will definitely come back.

i felt like being part of the family. as paulus, the owner, was major if the village for 5 years, he is known by everyone and it seems, that everyone likes him. you can book tours with him, but just keep in mind, that they will be on a small boat. i enjoyed it, since i fully trusted paulus, even when higher waves hit the boat. i've heard horror stories from other homestays, so there was no point for me to visit any of them. the reef is as beautiful as it looks on the drone shots and you get breakfast, lunch, a snack in the afternoon and dinner. no rats, no spiders, no trash. just some geckos, so i didn't even need the installed mosquito net around the bed. just be sure to buy anything you need in advance, since there is limited to no supply in the village. there will be a visitor every day, that wants some fresh bananas; she is called paula and is a cuscus. paulus also has a huge knowledge of the area's nature and can tell you when and where to find different kinds of birds. be sure to check out the book about the fish in raja ampat, for which paulus shot many photos. you will feel like being part of their family in this homestay. 🙏

Thanks to Aron, the host, it was an exceptional experience during our stay. We've visited almost every location for snorkeling and diving on Raja Ampat (you should pay for the boat). We'd a very diverse menu and a true natural Papua environment.

If you want true paradise waters in pure simplicity this place is perfect. Yes they very basic, but that’s exactly what we wanted to really feel true raja Ampat! There are only 3 huts so super quiet and they are very clean! No rats or nasties, and being over the water is amazing! The family are so lovely!!! They don’t speak English but are so kind and you feel that they respect your privacy also! The food was the best we had in raja ampat! We had meat or fish every day, with rice and 2 options of veg. The reef directly outside is beautiful with so much to see at your doorstep! It is a shared bathroom however it’s tucked away so you have privacy and we got used to it very quickly. Can’t recommend enough! We are so glad that we booked Korbekwan

The staffs are friendly, the excursion, day trip price is reasonable, foods are full board, meals are great with variety of fish, meat and vegetables, fruits. Location is great and close to most attractions dive, snorkeling spots. The house reef is ok and easy to swim when high tide. Bungalow is huge with 2 stories and can easily accommodate 4-5 people, love the terrace, it’s spacious and spectacular view, we can spend all day on the terrace, lots of fishes to spot like baby shark, walking shark and some beauty bird

Listening to our host's recommendations for places to see and what to do. We didnt follow a pre-scheduled list from online sources. We let local knowledge be our guides. This enhanced our experience. Embrace the food. Its tasty, its home cooked. Its local catch of the day, locally sourced fruits and vegetables. On one tour, Paulus our host pulled up to a boat and bought a fish. On our plates that evening!

Love the simple local life, nice to support the local...

Love the simple local life, nice to support the local Islanders. One major problem is, there isn't any recycling for plastic bottles etc. I spoke with some of the elders about this, but they simply said nothing has been organized to recycle rubbish especially plastic bottles. Definitely needs to be addressed. Marine life is so beautiful there.
