The town itself isn't much to write home about, but has all the facilities needed. The castle is fantastic and definitely worth a visit. Beautifully restored with fantastic photo ops. There's a lot to see in the fortress although it has been quite heavily restored with some totally new buildings. Nothing else in Akhaltsikhe itself but it's a good base for Varzia cave city and Sapara Monastery - always best to arrive early everywhere and you often have the place to yourself (not Varzia, too popular). We made a last minute change to our travel plans to come to Akhaltsikhe for 1 night. 1 night us definitely not enough, 2 nights would have been better to fit in a a slow paced tour of vardzia (2-3 hours recommended, plus 2 hours total driving time). Very impressive fortress/castle of IX century, rebuilt in XII century. However, in my opinion, some parts of the reconstruction of 2012 doesn't fit well with old structures and makes to desire much more. Overall, it is worth to visit it. But, if you are in Akhaltsikhe, you are simply OBLIGUED to visit Vardzia caves (1 hour away). It will leave you astonished!!! And also Saro megaliths and ruins of 2nd millennium BC (45 min away)... There are, of course, some well-documented issues with the staff at this hotel, but if you go in expecting these then I found the rest of the stay to be quite enjoyable. It is a very small, family owned hotel, right across from the city castle and the owners are very sweet, hospitable and made sure that everything was planned out for our trip around Akhaltsikhe. They even offered us home made wine and delicious treats. The rooms are spotless clean and the breakfast was homemade, delicious and very fulfilling. Best of all, the location is perfect—right across from the entrance to the fortress and just a short walk across the bridge to the newer part of town.
