FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Plenty of things to see and do in this beautiful place.

Plenty of things to see and do in this beautiful place. Even on the dullest Autumn day, York shines through with twinkly lights, friendly vibe and layers of history to capture your imagination. Never disappointing and such a nice place I'd like to move here. Walking the city walls, indulging ourselves in the cafes and good restaurants and visiting York minister were on our itinerary this visit. Plenty of independent shops and the market stalls to meander through.

We liked exploring the city which has many diverse attractions. We stayed for 3 days but could have stayed longer to see what is on offer. The city seemed tourist friendly and felt a safe place to be. We had breakfast at the guest house but enjoyed going out in the evening to eat.

Loved walking around Medieval walls. History of Dick Turpin. Great way to see everything on the hop on and off sightseeing bus. Shopping in the city centre/shambles are great. Then going back to have food and relax in the beautiful hotel.

Yortk has a very small historic area and at best is a day...

Yortk has a very small historic area and at best is a day and one night visit. We did not visit the Minister as the £40 entrance fee put us off. We did do a witches tour which was enjoyable and tells you everything about York, I would reccomend this. The Viking Centre was an amazing visitor centre, cleverly done and very informative. The city itself is ok but not one to rave about and would only reccommend a shor stay. We did visit Beverly which is a lovely vibarant market town with a HUGE minister, this is worth a visit, its free, the staff are so friendly and cannot do enough to help you, a great little town.

A comfortable and charming hotel located a few miles outside York. There is plenty of parking available at the hotel, plus a bus stop right outside the drive entrance where you can catch a bus into York City Centre. There is also a Designer Outlet and a Park and Ride facility not too far away. We found the hotel staff to be friendly and welcoming, nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them if it made your stay better. The choice at breakfast was excellent. We would certainly stay here again next time we come to York

Such a lovely hotel to stay in. Staff super friendly and could not do enough when I had a small issue with my meal, replaced and drink on the house given! Beautiful breakfast and catering for dogs with water available, dog friendly rooms and full use of the foyer and reception area at night with them. Very relaxed evening at the hotel after a day in York. Perfect location for park and ride, 15 mins on the No2 bus into the city centre. Our second visit to mercury and will definitely be back

Friends had recommended The Churchill to us, so we booked a two night midweek stay in February. The hotel is within easy walking distance of York city centre and has car parking available. All the staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and equipped with everything we needed for our stay. We ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant on both days and the food was excellent.
