Penrith must be the easiest town in the lakes to access from...
Penrith must be the easiest town in the lakes to access from affar. The M6 for N & S, and the A66 for E & W. Plenty of other feeder roads into the surrounding hills and countryside. A pleasant little town with a mix of corporate chain outlets and lots of indiviudual shops and restaurants. Plenty of choice and variety to suit most tastes. There is the castle to visit aswell, if you like. As touring motorcyclists, we found Penrith is perfectly placed as a base to explore the lakes and hills from and the mountain passes. I feel sorry for the town council.
I feel sorry for the town council. Penrith is very much a "gateway to the Lake District" so it gets very busy, especially in the middle of summer and coping with demands for accessibility and parking in a very old town is always going to be a problem. It really is a lovely town but this country has an aging population and I suggest that Penrith council really needs to think hard about the needs of it's aging residents and disabled visitors. There's a VERY sparse amount of parking dedicated to disabled travellers; the pavements are uneven and many are not wide enough to cope with a wheelchair. We stayed at and ate at Foundry 34 and the nearby chippie. Foundry 34 was trying to appeal to a younger crowd and although the food was fine, I felt it was expensive. I know Penrith well, I used to live and work here and its always a pleasure to return. It's a great little town with lots of great places to stay and eat, additionally the Lakes are on the doorstep and the locals are sooooo friendly. First time in Lake District and it is very pretty although we found it very expensive for everything: the boat trip, parking, ice creams, eating out and even charging for public toilets. The room was warm and clean, the bed was comfortable and it was quiet at night. There were a number of breakfast options, and the food was of a good quality and well cooked. The location is excellent, with a private parking area at the rear of the property. I could walk into the town centre in a few minutes and it was ideally suited to visit Potfest.
