Fabulous stay. Spacious bedroom, the communal kitchen has good facilities, excellent breakfasts. The hosts were very attentive. Best of all, the hosts took time in helping us choose which areas and attractions in Orkney to visit. As a result we had the most wonderful time with our sightseeing, and really enjoyed our holiday in the Orkneys.

Wonderful and helpful staff. Lovely restaurant with something for everyone. It is not a new hotel, and that is exactly why this is a great place to stay. It has soul and the surroundings are great if you want to unplug (or fish =))

Besides the unpredictable weather, Orkney offers a magical environment with something to interest everyone - including history, archaeology, wildlife, fishing, walking, beautiful beaches and other landscapes. Kirkwall and Stromness are exceptional for sightseeing and Orcadians are so friendly and genuine.

We stayed for three nights after eleven on Shetland.

We stayed for three nights after eleven on Shetland. We found great gluten free eating options in Kirkwall (I will review on Find me Gluten Free). We arrived very late on Friday. Saturday we spent in the many museums, historic buildings, galleries and shops of Kirkwall. We did one day trip by bus and ferryl to the excellent Sccapa Flow museum. Unfortunately the only day we had to do this was Sunday, when the buses are infrequent, so we had to spend most of the day at Scarpa Flow. On the monday, we were on the late night ferry to Aberdeen, and could not stay or leave our luggage in the apartment. So we hired a car - and visited the prehistoric monuments and the museum in Stromness before spending some at Scapa Beach. We ate in The Storehouse restaurant, which was really hospitable and the food was amazing, then getting a taxi to the ferry termina. We had visited a couple of islands in Orkney before, but this was our first time in these parts - we will bve back!

Great coastal hikes. Unbelievable archaeology. Mellow people. Decent public transportation on Mainland. Long, rich history. Beautiful place. Good charity shops and much locally made jewelry. Welcoming services at the cathedral and the Catholic Church. Good restaurants, but suggest you make reservations in advance.

The Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel are wonderful and full of fascinating wartime history. Maeshowe was a great visit with the commentary from our guide full of humour and interest. Ring of Brodgar and Stenness - atmospheric - as was Skara Brae. The St Magnus Cafe in Kirkwall is a great, casual eating place and the Ayre Hotel for something more formal - both with very good food.

In our 2.5 day stay, we made every moment count. This is a beautiful place with majestic geologic features, beautiful landscapes with rolling hills of green lush grass and speckled with sheep (and lambs in May) and cattle (calves in May) and rock walls everywhere. We visited many neolithic sites, including Skara Brae and surrounding sites, all of which were an incredible historical markers, a kind of time travel experience. Visiting the Orkneys is an experience of a lifetime.

Spectacular scenery, wildlife and history to explore plus a wealth of local creativity unique to the islands such as pottery, wood, tapestry, art and jewellery. Lovely local populations and plenty of information, museums and sights to keep you entertained if you’re not into walking. Good bus service on the mainland if you want to avoid driving but for some of the sights private vehicles necessary to avoid a long walk. Food options for vegans limited outside of Kirkwall and many restaurants have (understandably) varying opening hours to reflect demand

Janice was a wonderful hostess. She gave us a wealth of suggestions of hikes, restaurants and things to fo on Orkney. She provided a huge breakfast, cooked whatever we wished as well as juice, fruit, yoghurt, toast etc. The accommidation is a large private bedroom, separate den , and bathroom. Thr view andbthe garden was very nice to sit in and watch the afternoon sun. Wish we could have stayed longer. Everything was perfect -11 out of 10 rating

Absolutely fabulous! A really special place, overlooking Kirkwall and walking distance from the centre. We were on Orkney with our bicycles and Berstane Lodges was a perfect base for our 4 night stay. The hot tub was a perfect way to start each evening. The welcome treats left by our wonderful host were perfect too.
