Attractive town, historic buildings, River Trent - all lovely features; and Sherwood Forest and Rufford Park in easy reach. Newark Civil War Centre is very interesting and there are many old buildings in the town. Independent shops and Sarurday market. Sourhwell Minster is not far away and cities - Lincoln (similarly much historical interest) and Nottingham - are each about 20 miles drive. Good pubs and restaurants too. Koinonia (Kerala food) is a favourite.

We arrived on a Sunday for one night.

We arrived on a Sunday for one night. Many restaurants were closed in the evening. It is an historic location but looks a bit run down with many shops boarded up. We found Tambo Lounge, which as open and provided good food at reasonable prices. Luckily, our B&B (The Lions) was superb and this made up for some of the disappointment.

Newark is a quaint English town.

Newark is a quaint English town. It has lots of history and beautiful buildings. Sitting by the river trent it is a good place for summer walks, shopping and eating out. Lots of restaurants, old and new bars and interesting venues. The Prince Rupert, Swan & Salmon, Navigation and Castle Barge are all unique and worth a visit. We had an amazing meal in Asha Tandoori.

The riverside and castle area are pretty and interesting and the town in general is attractive and bustling. A good base for exploring the wider countryside with various NT properties nearby including Sir Isaac Newton's house (and apple tree). Ate out at The Riverside in Farndon (very good) and The Bromley in Fiskerton (nice but basic pub grub) (both about 20 mins drive from Newark). Both pubs overlook the River Trent. Fiskerton is a particularly nice spot.

Very interesting brick buildings which are different from the South of England. Went to the prize-winning fish and chip shop- well worth it. Liked walking the traffic free areas. Try a trip - by car or bus - to Southwell with its famous Minster and very attractive "best village in England".

Newark is a much older town than we realised.

Newark is a much older town than we realised. It has strong links to the civil war with a very good museum covering this. It is a major antiques centre so if you like them, definitely visit. The pubs/resteraunts are excellent with a good balance of traditional English grub and excellent Thai (Thai Sabai), Indian (Koinonia) , Vietnamese and Mexican options. Great pubs as well. Try the Prince Rupert, the Fox and Cron and Just Beer if you like real ale/cider. Lots of cafes to choses from (feeling peckish does a fab small breakfast for under £5). And if you are into a bit of culture, check out Gallery 6 for some amazing artwork. All within a few minutes walk of the market place. There are some rough edges but overall this is one of the friendliest and most relaxing places I know. This was out second visit and we will be going back next year (or sooner if we can!).

The price is cheaper than other places in Newark, and I visit this town a lot; for this reason, I chose them, not because they deserve my money.
