Catstrand, the community run Arts Centre, is a great resource. Very friendly village, great base for Galloway Forest and Loch Ken. Exciting to see lots of red kites and the odd deer. Sad to see that village cafes have closed and there lots of property for sale. Lovely gardens at Threave, Castle Douglas, Broughton House in Kirkudbright and Glenwhan.Guest review bysue - 10.0

The B&B was the best we have ever stayed in. The New Galloway (dark) park was super for walks and views, including a night time view of the stars. New Galloway is just a village, without a lot to see.
New Galloway is just a village, without a lot to see. The river and walks are good, the 'kites' trail is informative. There is a tiny grocery store with limited range, and a pub which I didn't try. Surrounding countryside is quiet, pleasant, and very green. It has good road connections to larger nearby towns. Breakfast was fantastic, other meals are not within easy walking distance. Gardens are beautiful and the views of the surrounding area are great. The owner is very friendly and helpful. Local roads are narrow and the nearby bridge is one lane. Drivers are courteous and forgiving. We were upgraded to the larger room as it wasn’t being used. No air conditioning but it was cool at night and an open window was more than sufficient. If we go back to the area we will definitely stay there again. Debbie greeted us on arrival and we really appreciated the cake for our afternoon tea, and the fresh eggs and milk for breakfast. We were lucky with the weather and thoroughly enjoyed sitting out on the decking, reading and watching the sheep!
