FAQs about hotels in Lincoln

The Glory of Medieval England

Lincoln was a powerhouse of medieval England and retains amazing monuments from that period. In the Uphill district is the castle built for William the Conqueror. Inside its an original copy of the Magna Carta and its ramparts offer fabulous city views. Across the cobbled square which houses the large Christmas market is huge Lincoln Cathedral whose unusual façade features 2 tall towers, while another at its centre overlooks the Bishop’s Palace.

Connecting the cathedral quarter with the Downhill district is aptly named Steep Hill, a narrow street lined with unique shops and historic buildings including the Jew’s House. Even older are the Roman Newport Arch, Mint Wall and the well on Bailgate.

This road slopes down to meet the River Witham at High Bridge, a stone-arched structure with a half-timbered building atop that is the oldest of its kind in England. Lincoln boat trips depart from the Brayford Pool just west.

Another monument is the 18th-century Ellis Mill, opposite the Museum of Lincolnshire Life. The Collection combines an archaeology museum and art gallery, while The Lawn has a conference centre and the Joseph Banks Conservatory, displaying artefacts he brought back from adventures with Captain Cook.

Booking.com’s Lincoln accommodation covers luxury waterfront hotels, guest houses by the university and cheap apartments near the train station.

The castle is a wonder, so much to see and learn about.

The castle is a wonder, so much to see and learn about. The walk around the castle walls especially give you a great view of the city. You could look around the prison cells and watch videos of people who were imprisoned there. Also the Magna Carta was on view. A very interesting place to visit and to walk around the grounds. The cathedral is also a lovely place to look around. Steep Hill has some quaint shops and places to buy afternoon tea and many other foods. Beware its a long steep walk on the way back up! We only had a day there but enjoyed every moment.

Cathedral and castle are both very well worth a lengthy visit. Some really interesting old streets in the upper town are really interesting, but on very steep slopes. The walking tour which starts from near the cathedral and lasts for about 90 minutes is very interesting and excellent value. The waterfront in the lower town is also very pleasant.

The cathedral dominates the town and rightly so.

The cathedral dominates the town and rightly so. It is beautiful. Definitely book for the roof tour, it is fascinating. I also recommend the open top bus tour. Lots of information about the town's history. Lots of lovely pubs too. Thailand No1 is a great restaurant Lion and snake is a good pub for food and socialising. Widow Cullens well is a quiet pub on Steep Hill, a tech free pub with board games and amazing food.

Lots of shops and places to eat and drink.

Lots of shops and places to eat and drink. A lot of the bars do get very busy as obviously a uni town so best to book to avoid disappointment with places to eat. There is a nice little area that overlooks the river that gets very busy in summer time.

Fantastic first trip to city. A lovely olde worlde feel. Great individual shops and eateries. Walk from bottom of city up to cathedral and castle was very steep so bear that in mind! Lots to see and do!

Our stay was brief so we only had a short time. The cathedral has impressive exterior stone carvings and the views from the castle must be great but we did not have the time to check that out. We ate at the Wig and Mitre (?) Good pub grub with good service.

The hotel was spotlessly clean, the food was good, and the staff were great, welcoming, polite, and helpful, providing an excellent service. The room was spacious, and the temperature was comfortable throughout the hotel. Facilities in the room were a good standard. The lounge seating area in the hotel lobby was comfortable. The location for Lincoln City Centre was excellent, and a spacious car park.
