Lovely little village with a charming array of small shops, gift shops, cafes and pubs and free parking. We also visited the Kirkby Stephen East railway station which runs steam and diesel trains regularly during the summer months and is run entirely with volunteers who couldn’t have been more helpful - an ideal place to visit for any railway enthusiasts. There is also a gift shop and ‘buffet car’. We tried ‘The White Hare’ cafe which is on the Main Street in the village and is dog friendly. Staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and the menu was well priced with a good and varied selection. We both had hot drinks and a Ploughman’s lunch (4 different variations to choose from) for £7.50 and they were lovely. The dog was given treats too. Would definitely pay another visit.

Kirkby Stephen is a very attractive town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. It has a couple of pubs with rooms, a handful of B&Bs, a couple of pubs without accommodation and a number of cafes. There is also a selection of local shops, some selling gifts, cards and momentos. The only places which serve food after 8.00 pm are the Indian and Chinese restaurants and the take away which sells pizzas, kebabs, etc. We ate in the Chinese restaurant which was very good - it looks like a takeaway from outside but does have a restaurant hidden away upstairs. The countryside around the town is gorgeous and there are a number of lovely walks in the surrounding areas, some of which are suitable for those (like me) who are not dedicated walkers.

Walks and cycle rides in every direction (roads not too frightening); both sides of Mallerstang worth walking as well as the valley (Garsdale rail station at far end); near Pennine Bridleway, on C2C I think; historic with the viaducts, Settle and Carlisle Railway

Very comfortable, quiet, clean and a good location close to both Brough and Kirkby Stephen. The wet room is excellent -well heated and plenty of room. On the Friday evening we ended up eating at the Outfitters Cafe Bar in Brough. We weren't sure what to expect but it was excellent - quirky, friendly, simple but nicely cooked food (a variety of burgers for the main course) and homemade deserts and all at a very reasonable price. A great place to stay for one or two nights.

The property was really beautiful - so well put together & we could tell that a lot of thought was put behind every little detail. The facilities were very modern yet it felt really cozy. It was also extremely clean. The hosts were very responsive and kind - they had left a freshly baked bread for us, which absolutely made our day! The location is also amazing - Kirkby Stephen has so much to offer, with loads of small shops, bakeries and beautiful walks into the Dales.

The staff were welcoming and friendly. The room was huge and warm and the bed very comfy. It's handy having a bar on site for a pint or two after a big walk before retiring upstairs for a wash and brush up. Also handy for a nightcap. The hotel is in the middle of the village and is handily placed for easy access to the fells. If we stay in Kirkby Stephen again, we will stay here.

I loved Kirkby Stephen Hostel for the drying room. It was such a welcomed facility on a very wet weekend. Denise is a lovely host, very welcoming. The kitchen and communal room were well equipped and in such a lovely setting of the old church.
