Ilfracombe is a lovely part of the Devon coast with great scenery and walks to be had. Ilfracombe itself as a town is very run down and not particularly a destination in itself, but a good base for exploring the area.

So many shops are boarded up or empty - a real shame.

So many shops are boarded up or empty - a real shame. The high street is particularly bad. The beach isn't really a beach - it's a very small cove with black sand and with huge jagged rocks poking out of it. Fine for dog walkers but not for a family with little children. Love it or hate it - the Damien Hirst statue at the harbour is worth a look. The museum is a lot more interesting than I anticipated. We ate in a Mediterranean restaurant called Levain - great food and lovely atmosphere - would highly recommend.

llfracombe is amazing for the picturesque walks and views, and watching the sunset. They can be quite hilly, but there are plenty of benches to rest on. Our favourite place to eat is the Admiral Collingwood Wetherspoons Pub, prices are good and it is ideally situated. Also the ice cream parlours are lovely. There is crazy golf, and a nice nature reserve to visit with a small waterfall we found.

Ilfracombe is a lovely seaside town.

Ilfracombe is a lovely seaside town. We went for a festival and it was very exciting to be there because of it. It's a lovely town to walk about in. Would have liked to have spent more time to explore the place further.

Our trip was too short to be able to explore Ilfracombe...

Our trip was too short to be able to explore Ilfracombe fully as we spent time at our family wedding at the Tunnel Beaches and made the best of our time together for those few days we had. The Carlton Hotel location was practically on its doorstep and easy on the feet for wearing heels as only a few yards away and you're there. Maddys chippy was fantastic for one of our evenings out. We had fresh plaice and chips and cannot remark highly enough on the portion sizes and the crispiness of the batter on the fish. Although slightly expensive it was well worth the cost as the service was impeccable. Nice also having a glass of wine with our meal. I also stopped to talk with a lovely lady called Jane Perrin at her art studio. It was lovely to watch her taking a class and later in the evening when passing by her closed shop, she kindly came to speak to me when I beckoned her to enquire about her school. She takes classes where she provides the canvas paint and easel during which she can help you make the best of what you may want to paint. I wasnt aware of her studio until I passed by on my last evening there but it certainly would be something I would partake on my next visit and would prebook before arriving. It was really lovely that she took the time to come out and speak to me and tell me about her life coming full circle as she used to be an art teacher. What a pleasure it must be to have a job later in life doing what one enjoys. Ilfracombe itself is very picturesque. Lots of interesting shops to see and it can take you down memory lane as you see the old style of Victorian architecture like something out of a history book. I can understand why people would revisit this town. It's great for a good hilly walk and the views at the hilltops take in a beautiful horizon of the landscape/sea in the evenings. Take a good pair of trainers as you'll enjoy it more with comfortable footwear.

Ilfracombe was lovely for a short family trip.

Ilfracombe was lovely for a short family trip. It has landmarks to visit, walks to go on, arcades, beaches, a strip of shops, restaurants parks, souvenirs and ice creams. The people she came across were friendly and the place seemed clean. A short drive away from a steam train, a big sandy beach and an amusement park/castle. Lots to do to keep the kids entertained. There are lots to do if you are not travelling with kids too.

Good location with parking. Few minutes walk to town and harbour. Matt and Amanda are excellent hosts, very friendly with loads of local knowledge about best places to visit, eat etc. The bedroom beautifully decorated and clean. Bed very comfy. Bathroom spotless. Good shower with plenty of hot water. Excellent choice for breakfast. Good WiFi connection.

We regularly visit Ilfracombe and we love this hotel. It’s by far the best we’ve stayed in there. I’ve also stayed there as a single female traveller and have always felt perfectly safe and comfortable.
