FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

The Cathedral is undoubtedly the main tourist attraction and you need several hours to fully appreciate the architecture and the features of the building. It isn't a cheap day out (currently the cost of entry is £18.00 per person - October 2025) but still represents good value, as you can use this to visit any number of times within one year. Despite the distance we will go back again, as I now know there are several things we missed during our visit. There are other things to see, but we only had one day in the city itself and the Cathedral was our main choice to visit.

We went for a long weekend - primarily to see the Catherdral. The Catherdral was stunning. We even went to the Sunday morning service, which was genuinely interesting to see. The whole building and surrounding estate was really worth the visit. The part of the city around the Catherdral was also lovely. Lots of indepdendent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Obviosuly some of it caters to the toursit trade, but overall it was really nice. We found a lovely vegetarian cafe, The Veg Box, and had a fantastic Italian meal on the evening. We also went to see a film at the Curzon at what looke dlike a brand new entertainment area. The Riverside, just at the northern end of the centre. Lots of history to learn about and a nice compact city centre. Rest of the weekend utilised our Nationa Trust membership at a couple of nearby places.

Canterbury is a pretty city with a rich history and plenty to do and see. Walking around the old streets and the canal is a very pleasant way to spend the day. There are many fantastic green spaces such as Westgate Park and you can enjoy punting on the canal. There are many great places to eat and drink and attractions like Canterbury Cathedral and the Roman Museum. It is well served by two train stations and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. You definitely need more than one day there!

Great city will lots of history , culture and vitality. Lovely walks along the Stour. Are at The Millers Arms and Pinocchios, both great mid-range ( Millers a pub and Pinocchios an Italian restaurant. However, there are upper bracket and lower bracket restaurants to choose from (Millers Arms was Dog friendly, Pinocchios wasn’t)

A walkable town just a couple hours outside of London with historic middle ages architecture mixed with modern buildings. Train rides were pleasant straight to and from King's Cross in London, so we spent a day in the West End seeing shows. Locals were very friendly and accommodating.

At every step you are looking at history, the centre of the city is full of ancient buildings and tourists and students from all over the world. There are lots of lovely restaurants- we ate at an Arabian place one evening. The cathedral is perfect, one of our reasons to visit was for my partner to visit the archives. I went to Mass and visited the Hear Us! graffiti exhibition- quite challenging. The cobbles are also challenging for the less mobile, but it's worth it

The hotel is perfectly located in the centre of Canterbury. Onsite parking is limited and cannot be pre-booked - luckily we only had small cases and parked in council car park but it was a bit of a walk back to the hotel so if you have anyone with limited mobility or you have large cases you need to be aware of this. Dinner in the hotel was lovely, they bought me the wrong drink but quickly replaced it. Breakfast was delicious and plenty for us. Staff were all pleasant and helpful.

The location is fantastic, with plenty of parking out back, it's only a 10 minute drive to Canterbury city centre, or 15 from the Wildlife animal park. The attached restaurant has a fantastic selection of meals and deserts. The breakfast selection was better than any other hotel I've been to.

The room was spacious and the breakfast was superb. Pilgrims Hotel is an excellent location for Canterbury West station and the city centre. We were visiting to go to a show at the Marlowe Theatre which is directly opposite the hotel. We would definitely stay there again.
