FAQs about hotels in Saint Malo

Walled Gateway to France

One of the major seaports connecting France and England, Saint Malo is Brittany’s most visited town and a tourist destination in its own right.

The Old Town overlooks the English Channel and is completely surrounded by restored walls. You get a great view of them if you arrive on the ferries from England to St Malo (either direct or by the Channel Islands). Once an island, this citadel now shelters behind it the hundreds of sailing boats bobbing in the modern harbor.

Within the Old Town are bars and restaurants serving oysters from nearby Cancale, and many of the St Malo hotels. The most notable sights are the cathedral with its colorful, stained-glass window, and the castle - site of the town's museum.

The beaches are sandy, though the water is somewhat bracing. A causeway leads to Grand Bé, a rocky island housing the tomb of Chateaubriand, its most famous son. To the south is the 14th-century Solidor Tower, a remarkable collection of artifacts from voyages around Cape Horn. Further inland is Labyrinthe du Corsaire, a huge maze that will keep kids busy for hours.

In the Rance River, connecting the sea to Dinan, is the world’s first tidal power station. The road over it leads to Dinard Airport, the closest to Saint-Malo.

St Malo is very laid back, there are many different areas to explore. Some areas are really up market we stayed mostly around near the ferry and along the beaches which we loved. There is so much to see wish we had longer there. We eventually found a restaurant that served vegan food which was really good. Also had a mediocre Indian restaurant meal. Very good health food shop. Shops selling local crafts etc

wow such a loverly location, with lots of history. We would like to come back in summer, as it was a bit cold when there. Love a swim at the beaches. Lots of sailing and kayaks on the waters, during the day.

As well as all the "headline" features described in the guide books, one of St Malo's strengths is that there is almost always an intriguing point of historical or geographical fascination round each corner. So, if you like to explore, it will reward you.

Gobsmacked! A bucket list item that did not disappoint.

Gobsmacked! A bucket list item that did not disappoint. It was worth the huge effort to climb up hundreds of near vertical steps to reach the top and to go into the cathedral. Photo opportunities at every turn and a rich tapestry of history throughout. I don't think anyone could take a bad photo of the Mont itself. Would highly recommend.

We stayed at the end of the season so it was quiet. Surprised there weren't more restaurants. Found one busy bar that was so busy we couldn't get in so went to a bar/restaurant near by where we had a pleasant enough meal.

It's a good option for budget travellers, one of the cheapest options in the city and not as far as some others. The bed was comfortable, the shower was spacious, I had a good one-night stay. Some people mentioned the rough area but I didn't see any problems with it. You're obviously not paying old town price so don't expect romantic cobblestones and stone buildings. Bus stops, supermarket nearby (closed after 9pm though). The walls were thin but no loud guests luckily.

Location was great being so close to the ferry terminal and the nearby parking was free although not secured. There is a small amount of parking outside the hotel but you had to be lucky to get a space. Breakfast was okay too. The staff were very helpful and being a budget hotel, we're not always posted at the reception.

We had a lovely stay in this stylish boutique hotel. The decor is gorgeous and the rooms are spotlessly clean and inviting. Great communal space around reception with plenty of tables and books. Generous breakfast buffet. Very quiet on the outskirts of town with easy parking. We would love to stay here again!

Good location inside the walls. Large family room with plenty space for 4 (2 adults and 2 children aged 16 & 13). Very clean. Quiet considering location. Hotel has no parking so if visiting in high season recommend booking a parking space at the Q park St Vincent which is nearby.

The location of the hotel is excellent, right next to the city walls overlooking the beach and on one of the main squares in the old town. It is also a couple of streets off the main tourist thoroughfares.
