Perouges is a genuinely medieval town and the old centre could be used as a film set without any alteration - it's like stepping 600 years back in time. The views are stunning and it is so atmospheric. Those unsteady on their feet or wheelchair users should be aware that the cobbled streets can be quite uneven.

We arrived at around 4pm and after contacting Gabriel we had the key to her apartment and were ready to look around Pérouges. It's a beautiful little piece of history in original condition and we sat and enjoyed a beer at the bar on the square. We then went looking for food but too early in the season and everything was closing down. We did find a Gallette shop and fell in love with them, kind of a thin pancake with honey and sugar cut like pizza, great. In the morning before continuing our journey south we had 3 or four hours in Perouges exploring, enjoying the roses and the architecture and finding the town right next to the medieval village where all mod cons are available Big Macs, petrol etc. Don't miss Perouges and stay at Gabriels, lovely lady, thanks.

The restaurant was unfortunately closed at our day of arrival, however we had a very intimate and tasteful dinner at the local restaurant 'Auberge Du Coq'. Very friendly people, they allowed us to sit at the balcony, overlooking the valley. Quite romantic and a splendid alternative. Hotel host was very helpful. Very impressive place to stay!

There are several good restaurants and bars, take away foods, and some gift shops. The medieval character of the town is well maintained, a credit to the residents. There doesn't appear to be a lot of tourist accommodation in the town itself, people are coming in just for the day but it is by no means crowded. There is very little traffic inside the walls of the town except for deliveries and drop offs. For longer stays you can shop and dine in nearby Meximieux which is a 15-20 minute walk away.

The 'city' has been maintained in 'original' condition.

The 'city' has been maintained in 'original' condition. The many artisinal shops well illustrate the range of skills within the village as do the boulangeries and restaurants providing a satisfying range of fare including the traditional galettes. Tours are available with guides if necessary. The village is small and can be adequately covered in half a day. It is very well worth visiting! There are a number of other historical sights within relatively close driving distance of the village which could make it a good base to explore the surrounding area as well.

I enjoyed my visit to Perouges very much.

I enjoyed my visit to Perouges very much. It is a beautiful town, completely medieval. There were already tourists in January. I think there will be many more in the spring and summer. I would recommend anyone wantng to stay in the old town to make reservations well ahead, months ahead for the high season.

The staff were very friendly and the setting and ambience is definitely unique - a "one off"! We appreciated the manager's kind offer to take us to the railway station on the day we were taking a train trip. The village, a big portion of which seems to be owned by the hotel, is really a heritage theme park... but why not?!?

Right in the centre of Perouges (even though Perouges is tiny!) and a short 10-15 minute walk to Merimeuix town for more food options. Check in was super easy and Sophie even allowed us to check in early. Free parking 2 mins walk from Sophie's place. A beautiful town and apartment for a little visit.
