FAQs about hotels in Santiago de Compostela

A Valuable City with Rich History

The city of Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia and the place where the Apostle St. James is buried. The city’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its distinguished old monuments around the Cathedral and the tomb of St. James.

Made of granite, the spectacular Baroque facade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela features massive bell towers and statues of St. James. The Obradoiro facade of the Cathedral is one of the most exceptional examples of the Spanish Baroque period.

Surrounded by magnificent buildings, the monumental square of Plaza do Obradoiro is one of the most historic squares in the world and the heart of Santiago. You can stay in one of the hotels, guest houses or apartments Booking.com offers nearby this majestic square.

The final destination of the Medieval pilgrimage route (El Camino de Santiago), this city is the best place to enjoy fresh fish and traditional Galician bread. Galicia is the seafood capital of Spain and the right place to savor Salpicón de Mar (seafood salad) and Pulpo á Feira (octopus cooked with salt).

The Christian pilgrimage route of the Way of St. James passes by Santiago de Compostela Airport, which is 16 km away from Galicia’s capital.

Santiago has numerous places of interest, churches,...

Santiago has numerous places of interest, churches, buildings, plazas, streets, monuments, statues and parks along with lot's of places to eat be it cafés, bar's or restaurants, some serving up excellent food, the best way to see Santiago is on foot through the many small streets & lanes where vehicles are prohibited.

I stayed for 3 days in SDC after my finishing the Camino Frances. I love the cathedral, visiting museums and churches, going to mass, meeting other pilgrims in the square, visiting and trying different restaurants and bars in the town. Spain has a very rich history and have enjoyed going through towns along the camino and finally finishing in SDC.

The Cathedral is a must, as is one of the daily Mass sessions (I'm an atheist but still appreciate the architecture and the rituals). The cathedral roof-top walk is worth attending, with beautiful views. However, it is also worth noting that the guide explains everything in Spanish, which is a shame. They could provide earpieces which translate into your language of choice. Santiago is a very easy city to walk around. There are plenty of good restaurants & tapa bars. I had a great piece of Veal at The Steak House is worth visiting.

Well worth exploring.

Well worth exploring. Still busy in late October but not overcrowded. Would have been even better if we had arrived on foot having completed a compostela. We would probably consider it excessively busy had we visited in the summer when 5000+ walkers arrive each day.

We loved the location of this booking.

We loved the location of this booking. It was close to the cathedral, and restaurants. However, it was quiet enough to get a good night's sleep. There were several restaurants that were open early enough to get a yummy cafe con leche.

Great cathedral located in a beautiful square (or placa?).

Great cathedral located in a beautiful square (or placa?). Surrounding area to cathedral was engaging. Lovely shops and eateries. Pleasant atmosphere. Worth a visit particularly, of course, for camino walkers.

Ideal location for Santiago old town. Walking distance to all bars, restaurants, shops and sights. The entrance to the hotel is on a narrow street and the reception on the third floor (lift available). Once in the hotel it is a lot bigger than first impressions. Boutique is a good description. Breakfast was good value but limited choice. Parked motorcycle in nearby pay car park,(Praza de Galicia), about 13 Euros per day, which was undercover and 1 minutes walk away.

This was the last stop on our tour of northern Spain and was one of the best! The room was super comfortable, spotlessly clean and had everything we needed, including a very good coffee machine. The location is outstanding, literally just by the cathedral, with restaurant and cafes and all the sights nearby. Parking in the St Clements car park easy and a 5 minute walk, with a discount via the hotel. Would highly recommend a stay here.

Beautiful hotel ideally located for the old town of Santiago de Compostela. The brickwork was really unusual and the room we stayed in was huge! Beds extremely comfortable and the staff very helpful.
