FAQs about hotels in Cairo

Resting Place of Pharaohs

Born of an ancient civilisation, Cairo is a vast metropolis centred around the Nile. Its sheer scale can feel overwhelming (especially when flying over it into Cairo Airport), so plan ahead. An obvious starting point are the Giza Pyramids. Although the pharaohs are long gone, the grandeur of their burial pyramids, the Sphinx and Solar Boat are testament to their ambition.

The city’s Egyptian Museum houses a dazzling display of ancient Egyptian artefacts, including finds from Tutankhamun’s tomb in Luxor. Around the corner is Tahrir, a huge square and focal point of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.

East is Islamic Cairo, home to 9th-century Ibn Tulun Mosque, Al-Azhar Mosque (site of the world’s oldest university), and the Khan el-Khalili souk – remember to haggle. The Citadel, with its elegant Mohammed Ali Pasha Mosque, sits on a hill offering far-reaching city views.

If you want to step out of cultural tours, take a Nile cruise by felucca, spot wildlife in Wadi Digla desert park or visit Egypt’s top theme parks: Dream Park and Magic Land, where you can tour Egyptian TV studios.

Before heading to your Cairo accommodation, sample the local cuisine – the falafel and fuul (bean paste) are delicious. Turkish coffee is a staple and there are hundreds of shisha bars, while major Cairo hotels have bars serving alcohol.

Lovely to see the Pyramids, but Cairo itself is a bit rundown much poverty in the streets, cars very old, no pedestrian crossings, therefore a bit of a hazard to cross roads. Prices are very cheap but some small shops take only cash EGP. Roads, cars and houses are very dusty. The Grand Egyptian Museum a must see especially for the Tutankhamun and the Museum of Civilization for the mummies. Old Cairo excursion really worth it. Enjoyed excursion for cruise on the Nile with dinner, belly dancing and tanoura show.

Cairo is chaotic, crowded, unfathomable to outsiders, and unforgettable. The urban maelstrom is not for the faint of heart, but for those who are willing to surrender to its madness, the rewards are manifold. I highly recommend a guide and a driver (Real Egypt is your top-notch go-to for organizing everything). Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT attempt to drive in Cairo. Do visit both the GEM and the National Museum. Wander the streets of medieval Cairo. Visit mosques from different eras. Of course visit the pyramids at Giza, but don't miss Saqqara for a better experience. Explore the delta and have lunch at The Lotus Farm. Enjoy Cairo in all of its exhausting splendor and squalor!

Cairo is a very intense and chaotic place.

Cairo is a very intense and chaotic place. We spent one day exploring Giza area and another day exploring Old Cairo. The pyramids were amazing, from Giza to Saqqara. Old Cairo is very cool in its own way, but honestly I would have preferred to cut my stay by 1 day to add an extra day in Luxor. Unfortunately, I got to the city when the GEM was closed so I didn't get to see it. Cairo museum was good but a bit run down.

NOT recommended. The worst city I've seen so far.

NOT recommended. The worst city I've seen so far. Dirty, noisy, messy. ugly. Everything is broken. Traffic is a permanent screaming chaos. Dust in the air makes you cough the day you arrive. Car horns at night keep you awake. Not a single finished house in sight.

This was the best place we stayed on our Egypt holiday! The hotel is very well kept, feels luxurious with a vintage vibe. Definitely boutique. Our room was very clean and comfortable. I appreciate the small touches like the toiletries, information folder, and the welcome fruit basket. The staff were attentive, welcoming and helpful. They helped us book a taxi to the airport for our early morning flight, and even prepared breakfast boxes for us. The location was ideal as it’s a 15-20 minute drive to the international airport.

Arranged at last minute and hotel was very helpful at arranging airport taxi. Room was passable and rather clean. Food ok (breakfast buffet), some items are regularly out though. It is pretty cheap and close to Giza pyramids and those are the only advantages. View from the tarrance is ok, but the whole area looks rather depresing due to lots of poorly treated animals, unfinished constructions, chaotic design and garbage. But that is esentially Egypt.

The best location in Cairo downtown, close to the Old Egyptian Museum, several metro stations. There were many shops, restaurants and cafe bars nearby. The building itself has elevator, so that is easy to go to the 6th floor where the hostel is. The breakfast was better than in other downtown hotels in Cairo, and vary every morning! The staff is friendly and does not harass you with travel offers like elsewhere in Egypt. (Thanks!)

The location is amazing and all floors and bedrooms are facing Nile . most of staffs are friendly . It worth to mention as an example of helpful staff Ms Rana who is responsible about hotel boat and restaurants reservations . She was so helpful and friendly when we booked Hilton boat and she also responded to my all questions about the best places to find Egyptian products and shipping .

Excellent location, right in the middle of downtown Cairo. Close to the metro, many restaurants and Egyptian Museum. But the best part is the staff, the guys at the reception were so friendly and helpful. We were collected from the airport straight to the hotel and there were no issues at all. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was also OK.
