Out of a Fairytale
The half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and brightly painted façades of medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber wouldn’t be out of place in a fairytale. Several fantastical films have been set in this gem on the scenic Romantic Road, passing from Würzburg to Füssen via Bavaria’s most enchanting towns.
Uniquely designed gates allow access to the historic centre through walls partly covered with tiled roofs. Walking along the walls offers a different perspective of the town’s colourful flowers, step gables and towers. The town hall has the tallest tower, whose far-reaching views include the large Marktplatz, home of the Christmas market. The Christmas Museum is a year-round winter wonderland, as is the shop of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the internationally renowned German Christmas decoration producer.
On a different note, the Crime Museum houses medieval torture instruments including a ducking stool. Holy Blood and Last Supper altarpieces form the focal point of towering St James’ Church, a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
In the River Tauber valley outside the centre are lush gardens, one containing Toppler Castle, a bizarre structure resembling a house on a tower. Also in the valley is a double-arched stone bridge.

A remarkable town.

We arrived around 1pm, and left the following day around...
We arrived around 1pm, and left the following day around 11am. I could have stayed another day. The town is quite large and while the day trippers come in and see the main street, there is so much more to do here - side streets to wander and shop, the city walls and outside the walls - many walking and biking paths. The town is always busy.
The town is always busy. If you like nature and walking, I recommend the area surrounding Rothenburg. The landscape is beautiful. I would recommend going up the Rathaus tower and viewing the town from way up.Guest review byKoch - 10.0
Absolute picture book place of the idyllic Bavarian Town.
Absolute picture book place of the idyllic Bavarian Town. Plenty of wonderful street wandering to be done with many cafes and restaurants (mostly in the hotels). Being hypocritical for a moment, there are a lot of tourists visiting during the middle of the day. The location of the hotel was excellent, being very close to the main market square. All staff we encountered were super friendly. The parking garage was a huge plus given the limits on vehicles in the old town. The room was modern and very comfortable. And even given the location right on a main thoroughfare in town, we found the hotel to be very quiet after 5 p.m. once most of the day-trippers had left. I appreciated the little touches like the table reserved for us in the dining room and the excellent German breakfast on both days we were in Rothenburg o.d.T.
