Cosy Gem At the Foot of Matterhorn
A beautiful car-free village in the Swiss Alps, Zermatt is world-famous for its skiing and mountaineering qualities. Standing in the shadow of the impressive Matterhorn, this is a true Alpine paradise, popular with both celebrities and citizens of all nationalities.
Surrounded by stunning mountains and plenty of hiking trails, Zermatt offers more than just pretty views. The nearby Sunnegga Paradise ski area needs to be accessed by 3 successive means of transport: a funicular railway, a gondola and a cable car, making it a great ride with an even better finish! And in Zermatt, there is still even more!
This lovely village is a great base for hiking on the nearby Breithorn, the easiest trek of the entire Alps, rewarding the effort with a great panorama of the snow-covered mountain tops and charming villages below.
Try mountain biking in the Zermatt area and after a very active day relax in one of the cosy restaurants and bars with an open fire and comfortable armchairs. Or just have a stroll down the main street and enjoy the view of the wooden chalets and do some window shopping.

A very well run town. Train service from Täsch was easy to navigate, and the down town area was walkable and quaint. Lots of shops and restaurants, although the shops tend to close early. If you like walking this trip is for you. The Matterhorn Trail was fantastic as the track was complimented with beautiful places to eat. Food is expensive though with little choice. Zermatt is a very cute town.
Zermatt is a very cute town. It is reputedly vehicle-free but there are plenty of electric service vehicles whizzing about. Nice shops to browse. It is a very expensive place to eat - it wasn’t uncommon to see families sharing main courses (eg. Pizzas). Great furnicular service inside the mountain, where you are immediately rewarded with Matterhorn views. Lots of hiking options at the top too. It is also the start of The Glacier Express. Zermatt is a superb holiday destination - a must visit and a must stay as long as possible! We stayed in a self-contained apartment which was terrific, allowing options for breakfast as we prepared for long days in the Alps. Accommodation pricing was expensive but is actually reasonable given the location and the distance from alternate accommodation. The "things-to-do" are mind-blowing; from cog-wheel trains to the highest station in Europe to gondolas over glaciers to near-vertical funiculars linked with glorious mountain hikes to terrific restaurants - there is no limit to the fun in Zermatt. Zermatt is a lovely place to reconnect with nature. The pure alpine air, the gorgeous scenery, the walkable village (car-free with no pollution) and the climb up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Gornergrat made this trip a most memorable one. Zermatt has so so much to offer, its a nature lovers dream, we went in summer so we did hikes but could have done so much nnore, there was skiing, climbing, adventure parks, and so many place to see and eat , our hotel was amazing they gave us all the info to get around, what to see, just make sure when you book transport , you book the train into town or a car that can drive you to the drop off point not the train station out of town ,Guest review byScottAustralia
