Loved the township of Penola and Coonawarra in close proximity. We visited cafes, Lolly Shop, Farmer George's shop, Petticoat Lane, local Pubs and great Pasta at Ottelia. Would love to spend more time.

Penola is a quiet historical town right on the edge of Coonawarra’s vineyards. It’s a fascinating place and you can tell the locals are really proud of their town. I absolutely loved Penola. The Vintage Cafe was great, Pipers restaurant was fabulous (not much change from $250 for 2, but delicious). Royal Oak, good food, nice people. Ange in the tourist information place was lovely and gave us loads of advice. Did a wine tasting at family run Di’Georgio vineyard…very good. Penola is a great location to base yourself and get to lots of other places (without dealing with loads of crowds).

What a beautiful region.

What a beautiful region. So many things to do around this area and the locals are friendly and take pride in their town and promotion of the region. This little town doesn’t disappoint. You can go back again and again and always explore something new. Add to your wish list.

You would really only go to Penola for the beautiful Coonawarra wineries. It is a 2-3 night stay only. Dinner options are very limited in the sleepy town however both were exceptional - Pipers of Penala & The Royal Hotel.

Of course the main reason people visit Penola is for the wine region and the many vineyards of the Coonawarra but if you also have some extra time, make sure you visit Petticoat Lane in the town where you will find a number of old houses built by the first inhabitants to live in Penola in the 19th century. Very interesting and doesn't take a lot of time.

Penola is a lovely country town where you could spend a few days sightseeing. We were there for a wedding and only spent a short time in the town. We would have liked to had time to browse in the shops, such as the antique shop and check out the beautiful old homes in the township and visit some of the wineries. You could also spend time in Naracoorte sightseeing the caves which is not too far to travel from Penola.

The location is excellent, straight across the road from a hotel and main street that had great little shops and plenty of cafes. Also short walking distance to historical precinct. The home was immaculately clean and all amenities had been thought of, including a nice bottle of local red. Breakfast was included, which was great value. Loads of interesting books to read fiction and local historical, plus old photos of the town. We wish we could have stayed a lot longer. Really highly recommend!

Staying at Ulva Cottage is an authentic experience of pioneer Penola - with mod cons such as heating and hot showers! The cottage was built but Alexander Cameron, a founding father of Penola and uncle to Australia’s Saint Mary MacKillop, who started her teaching order in Penola. The beds are cozy, the atmosphere is snug. A great place to relax.

We stayed here several years ago and it is still a good place to stay in Penola. Unfortunately this time it was a bit too cold to enjoy the bbq and outside area which looked very inviting.

Relax on Riddock was very spacious, quiet and walking distance to everything. Loved our time in Penola and wished it was longer.
