Our three-night stay at Matraville Homestay was a very welcome change-of-pace after jungle treks and volcano hikes in Bukit Lawang and Berestagi. Our unit was VERY large (it would have easily suited a family of four) and well-appointed with a TV, fridge, sink and kettle for use. It was also spread over two levels, with the downstairs serving as the entrance/living room area/kitchenette, and the bedroom and bathroom/separate shower area upstairs. BONUS(ES): the unit entrance featured a little patio with a table and chair where you could have an early-morning coffee or tea while facing the sunrise; the upstairs level also provided a small balcony area to take in the morning sun or evening dusk. While the room we chose was across the street from the water (a 90-second walk at most, down a couple of shallow flights of steps, and therefore didn’t provide a direct waterfront view), there are two rooms available in another portion of the property that face the water and are just steps from it. Our excellent Host, Dimmer, picked us up from the Tuk Tuk ferry landing (and can also drop you off when you depart) and will provide you with everything you might need to make your stay comfortable, including tips on places to eat or have coffee nearby and suggestions for what to do/see on Samosir Island. He will also provide scooters for daily/multi-day use for very reasonable rates.

This beachfront property offers access to a terrace, free private parking and free WiFi. The bed and breakfast provides quiet street views, an outdoor fireplace and a 24-hour front desk. My partner and I stayed here for two nights, and would have liked to stay two weeks if we had the time. Tio is such a lovely host as is all the staff. They went out of their way to make us feel at home and help us out with anything we needed. The room was super clean and comfortable, the garden is so beautiful and lovely to relax in, the food is tasty, the coffee was so so good, and the museum and grounds in general are lovely to explore and spend time in. Highly highly recommend staying here if you are anywhere around lake Toba!

Sisingamangaraja XII International Airport is 130 km from the property. This was for sure the best place I stayed in tuk tuk! The hosts were definitely the best part, so kind and helpful. The room was extremely clean and comfortable. I had a fan, toilet paper, towel, free water refills and hot water in the shower which is rare here! It is in a quieter area but not far from delicious food. There is no direct lake access but you can access the lake from any restaurant if you order some food and ask permission :)

Scooter available on site. Property can also arrange transport out of Lake Toba to various destinations. Staff is friendly, helpful and efficient. Clean room is huge with comfortable bed and pillows. Bathroom is big. Room has shelving racks and seating area (both indoors and outdoors). Sufficient power socket available on both sides of the bed.
